MIAC announces 2023 Women’s Tennis awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced the 2023 MIAC Women’s Tennis Awards on Tuesday.

St. Catherine senior Kelsey Dorr was the inaugural recipient of the MIAC Women’s Tennis Singles Player of the Year award, while the St. Olaf duo of Allie Prokosch and Olha Zubarieva received the conference’s first Doubles Team of the Year honor. Gustavus first-year Molly Austin was named the inaugural Rookie of the Year and Carleton head coach Luciano Battaglini was named the Head Coach of the Year for women’s tennis.

St. Olaf senior Allie Prokosch was also selected as the 2023 MIAC Chris Evert Award winner. The award annually recognizes a senior women's tennis student-athlete who exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic, and humanitarian accomplishments.

Dorr (Princeton, Minn.) was selected as the MIAC Singles Player of the Year after going 7-3 at the No. 1 singles spot in conference play this season. Dorr’s seven victories were tied for the most by any player at the top singles spot this year. She finished the regular season ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Region VII Rankings.

Prokosch (Mendota Heights, Minn. | Henry Sibley) and Zubareiva (Kyiv, Ukraine) combined for a 9-1 record at No. 1 doubles against MIAC opponents this season to earn Doubles Team of the Year honors. The tandem also finished the regular season ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Region VII Rankings.

Prokosch was also selected as the recipient of the prestigious MIAC Chris Evert Award. A co-captain and four-year starter on the court for the Oles, Prokosch also excelled in the classroom with a 3.9 cumulative GPA, two Dean’s List honors, and induction into the National College Athlete Honor Society, as well as in the community where she has served as a healthcare volunteer in addition to internships in food support and preventative care.

“She is a person who likes to help everyone,” St. Olaf head coach Scott Nesbit said. “Allie can lighten the seriousness that tennis can bring with her smile and a kind word.”

Prokosch is the sixth Ole since 1997 to receive the MIAC Chris Evert Award.

Austin (Arden Hills, Minn. | Mounds View) received MIAC Rookie of the Year honors after going a perfect 10-0 in MIAC singles matches in her debut season, including eight wins at the No. 3 spot. Austin also tallied an 8-2 mark at No. 1 doubles.

Battaglini (16th season) received the MIAC Coach of the Year Award for women’s tennis after guiding Carleton to a perfect record and the program’s sixth conference championship in the last 12 seasons. This is Battaglini’s third Coach of the Year honor, having been previously selected as the recipient in 2012 and 2017.

The 2023 MIAC Women’s Tennis All-Conference Singles and Doubles teams were also recognized. The All-Conference team is selected based on performance during conference dual matches, with the top 18 players (including ties) recognized for both singles and doubles. A player must play in five conference matches at any position to be eligible for the honor. Coaches also voted on honorable mention selections.

Awards are nominated by and voted on by the MIAC head women's tennis coaches and only statistics from MIAC matches are considered for conference honors; any nominated player not selected as All-Conference but still receiving votes from at least three coaches was named honorable mention.

The MIAC also announced the inaugural All-Playoff Team for women's tennis, which recognized the top nine performers from the conference tournament, as selected by playoff-participant head coaches.
