MIAC teams ready for one more week of NCAA Championship competition

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) teams are preparing to close out the 2023-24 year with the final NCAA Championships of the spring season this week.
Women's Golf
MIAC champion St. Catherine will represent the conference at the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships, held May 21-24 at the Keen Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. Carleton's Carter Sichol was also selected as one of six individual competitors.

The championships will consist of both team and individual competitions conducted concurrently. Following 36 holes of competition, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams, and the top six individuals not on one of those teams to compete on the final day. In the team competition, the low four scores from each team for each day will count in the team's total score. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.

Outdoor Track & Field
The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Track & Field Committee announced the accepted entries for the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend. Thirty-six MIAC student-athletes are listed among the qualifiers for this year's NCAA Championships.

For each individual event contested, including the decathlon and heptathlon, the top 22 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 16 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition.

The championships run from Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Men's Tennis
Three Gusties will compete in the individual NCAA Championships later this week. Gustavus' Marco Siviero was selected for the singles tournament, while the Gusties' tandem of Gage Gohl and Tyler Haddorff were selected for doubles. The individual championships are scheduled for May 26-28 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis.

Women's Tennis
Carleton's Amelia Asfaw was selected to the singles tournament, while she and partner Mary Hose earned a nod for the doubles tournament as well when the individual NCAA Championships get underway later this week. The individual championships are scheduled for May 25-27 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, Missouri, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis.

Softball
The three MIAC regular-season co-champions wrapped up their seasons over the weekend in NCAA Regionals. Saint Mary's won its opener against DePauw on Thursday before dropping two back-to-back games against Coe and DePauw on Friday. After falling in the first game to UW-Whitewater on Thursday, Bethel won three straight against UW-Superior, UW-Whitewater, and Central before losing in the win-or-go-home game to Central on Saturday. Saint Benedict also bounced back from a first-round loss to UW-Oshkosh to win games against Wartburg and Illinois Wesleyan before seeing the season end in the regional championship to the Titans on Saturday.

Of note, Bethel pitcher Kayla Simacek played her final game as a Royal on Saturday, finishing her collegiate career with 1,193 strikeouts - ninth-most in NCAA Division III history.

Baseball
MIAC Playoff champion Bethel saw its season come to an end in La Crosse, Wis. over the weekend. The Royals went 0-2 in the UW-La Crosse Regional, falling to the host on Friday and Benedictine on Saturday in an elimination game.

Men's Golf
The men's golf season came to a close last week at the 2024 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.

Both Saint John's and Bethel made the cut as teams, with the Johnnies finishing 12th in the nation at +10 for the tournament (289-298-287-288=1162) and the Royals in 16th at +20 (282-299-290-301=1172). Both Bethel's Conor Schubring and Saint John's Sam Berger tied for 24th individually with even-par scores of 288 over the four-round event.
