2024 MIAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship Preview

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The 2024 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set to get underway on Friday, as twelve women's teams from around the league will compete in the two-day meet held at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.

The MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships officially kicked off last week with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon competitions held at Carleton College. This weekend's action will begin on Friday afternoon with field events starting at 2:00 p.m. and track events beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday's events are scheduled for a noon start with the final set of events - the women's and men's 4x400 relay - running at 5:10 p.m.

The MIAC has a homepage dedicated to the 2024 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, complete with the event schedule, entries, heat sheets, and links to follow the action via webcast and real-time results. Results and recaps of the Championships will be made available throughout the event.

All tickets for the Championships will be sold and purchased online. There will not be cash sales at the venue; however, spectators can purchase tickets using a mobile device at any time, including while at the venue. Tickets can be purchased online via HomeTown Ticketing. Adult admission is $12; the price for youth (ages 6-18) through college students is $2. Children aged 5 and under and MIAC pass holders will be admitted for free.

HANDING OUT THE HARDWARE
MIAC championship plaques will be presented to the first-place women's and men's teams at the conclusion of the meet on Saturday afternoon. Gustavus is the defending champion on the women's side. The Gusties won their second consecutive women's conference title in 2023. In addition to team awards, the top three finishers in each event will automatically earn All-Conference honors, while the fourth-through-sixth place finishers will be named Honorable Mention.

Individual awards will be voted on by coaches following the meet and will be announced - along with the complete list of All-Conference and honorable mention recipients - next week.

IN THE POLLS
Saint Benedict is No. 21 while Bethel ranks No. 24 in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday, May 8.

Bethel leads all MIAC teams in the USTFCCCA's most recent regional rankings, released on Tuesday, May 7. The MIAC has four squads - Bethel (No. 6), Carleton (No. 7), Gustavus (No. 9), and Saint Benedict (No. 10) - in the North Region's top 10 this week.

NATIONAL NOTABLES
Bethel senior Annessa Ihde (Appleton, Wis. | North) ran the fifth-fastest 800-meter time in NCAA Division III this season with a 2:09.02 on 4/24.

Bethel graduate student Kelsie Sealock (Plymouth, Minn. | Osseo) has the fourth-fastest 100-hurdles time in NCAA Division III this season at 13.86 (4/24). Her 400-hurdles time of 1:02.54 (5/3) ranks tenth in the nation.

Bethel's 4x400-meter relay team of graduate student Kelsie Sealock (Plymouth, Minn. | Osseo), senior Abbie Swenson (Woodbury, Minn. | New Life Academy), senior Annessa Ihde (Appleton, Wis. | North), and first-year Shalom Sulungaine (Blaine, Minn.) ranks 14th in NCAA Division III this season with a time of 3:51.08 (4/24).

Carleton sophomore Hannah Preisser (Chapel Hill, N.C. | Carrboro) ranks 19th in NCAA Division III for the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:32.83 (4/19).


Gustavus junior Megan Geraets (Mankato, Minn. | East) ranks 13th in NCAA Division III with a long jump distance of 5.78 meters (18' 11.75") (5/3).

Hamline junior Jade Hunt (St. Paul, Minn. | Tartan) is 20th in NCAA Division III with a discus throw of 44.20 meters (145' 0") (4/20).

Hamline senior Molly Meyers (Marshfield, Wis.) ranks ninth in D-III for the shot put this year with a distance of 14.08 meters (46' 2.5") (5/3).

Saint Benedict sophomore Jaylyn Ahlberg (Shoreview, Minn. | Mounds View) ranks 20th in NCAA Division III for the pole vault this season with a distance of 3.71 meters (12' 2") (5/1).

Saint Benedict senior Fiona Smith (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) leads NCAA Division III in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:57.28 (3/29), as well as the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:53.27 (4/24). Smith also ranks fifth in the 1,500-meters this season with a time of 4:25.80 (5/1).

St. Olaf junior Alison Bode (Minneapolis, Minn. | Southwest) ran the 20th-fastest 10,000-meter time in D-III this season at 35:34.19 on 4/24.

St. Scholastica senior Lily Beneke (Green Isle, Minn. | Sibley East) ranks sixth in NCAA Division III for the hammer throw this season with a distance of 57.89 meters (189' 11") (5/1).


DEFENDING THE CROWN
Bethel sophomore Nora Wilhelm (Maplewood, Minn. | Concordia Academy) won the MIAC title in the discus with a toss of 41.37 meters in 2023.

Gustavus junior Megan Geraets (Mankato, Minn. | East) is the defending MIAC champion in the 400-meter dash with a winning time of 58.14 in 2023.

Saint Benedict senior Fiona Smith (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) won the 2023 MIAC title in the outdoor 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:34.40. She also won the 5,000 meters in 16:19.98 and the 10,000 meters in 34:31.92.

St. Scholastica senior Lily Beneke (Green Isle, Minn. | Sibley East) is the defending MIAC champion in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.16 meters in 2023.


AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg first-year Allison Hookom (Andover, Minn. | Anoka) claimed a pair of event wins at the Meet of the UnSaintly on 5/3, placing first in both the 400 and 800-meter dashes. Her time of 57.91 seconds in the 400 was a new personal best in the outdoor season and was the third-fastest in program history. In the 800 meters, she clocked a time of 2:20.08.

Bethel senior AnnaGrace Nelson (Cambridge, Minn. | Cambridge-Isanti) became the Royals' first-ever MIAC heptathlon champion when she won the competition at the MIAC Multi-Event Championships on 5/2-3. Her score of 4,264 points is a new program record.

Carleton sophomore Hannah Preisser (Chapel Hill, N.C. | Carrboro) finished third out of 52 entrants in the 10,000-meter run at the Phil Esten Challenge on 4/19-20. Preisser clocked a time of 35:32.83, slicing more than 19 seconds off her previous personal best and ranking 18th in Division III this season.

Concordia sophomore Emily Rengo (Esko, Minn.) was a part of three top-five marks at the NDSU Tune-Up on 5/3. She recorded personal-best times in the 100 and 200 meters and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that recorded the fifth-fastest time in program history (49.30). Rengo clocked a 12.45 in the 100-meter dash and finished the 200 in 25.50.

Gustavus junior Megan Geraets (Mankato, Minn. | East) took first in the 200 meters with a time of 24.49, setting a new meet and stadium record at the Bethel Invitational on 4/13. Geraets won the event with the second-best all-conditions time in program history, which ranks among the top 20 in D-III this year. Geraets was also a part of the winning 4x100 relay team that took first with a new season-best and MIAC-leading time of 48.59. In addition, she set a new meet and stadium record in the long jump at 5.67 meters (18' 7.25"), which ranks eighth in the nation. Geraets was the only athlete to win three events at the meet.

Hamline senior Molly Meyers (Marshfield, Wis.) recorded a shot put distance of 14.05 meters (46' 1.25") at the Gary Wilson Invitational on 4/24. The throw ranked second at the meet, ninth in NCAA Division III this season, and third in Hamline program history.

Macalester first-year Diarra Chatham (Woodbury, Minn. | East Ridge) took third in the 100-meter dash at the Joe Sweeney Invitational on 5/1. She crossed the finish line at 12.35.

Saint Benedict senior Fiona Smith (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) won the 1,500-meter run at the Joe Sweeney Invitational on 5/1 with a time of 4:25.80. The time was 0.29 seconds off her all-time best time in the event and ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season.

St. Catherine senior Gabby Bodin (Minneapolis, Minn. | Osseo) was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles at the Meet of the UnSaintly on 5/3. Bodin crossed the finish line in 15.33.

Saint Mary's senior Samantha Kubes (New Prague, Minn.) uncorked a throw of 50.65 meters to win the hammer throw at Hamline's Meet of the UnSaintly on 5/3.

St. Olaf sophomore Isabel Wyatt (Minneapolis, Minn. | Southwest) ran the third-fastest 800-meter time in program history at the Joe Sweeney Invite on 5/1 with her second-place finish of 2:13.00. The sophomore's time was the fastest at the meet by an NCAA Division III runner and ranks third in the MIAC and 34th nationally this season.

St. Scholastica senior Lily Beneke (Green Isle, Minn. | Sibley East) claimed two first-place finishes over the weekend in the hammer throw. At the Maverick Open on 5/1, she broke her third facility and meet record this season with a toss of 57.89 meters (189' 11"). That throw was a new-season best and ranked fourth on the D-III qualifying list. Beneke's throw of 57.45 meters (188' 6") just missed another facility record at the Ole Open on 5/4, as she claimed her fourth first-place finish of the season.
