MIAC Athletes of the Week - February 3, 2025

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for basketball, hockey, and tennis on Monday. Student-athletes from Carleton, Concordia, Gustavus, Macalester, Saint Benedict, St. Catherine, and St. Olaf claimed the Conference's weekly honors.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball, hockey, and tennis) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming & diving and indoor track & field) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week
Eric Wentz
Macalester College

Eric Wentz averaged 23.5 points while shooting 51.7 percent from the field over two games for the Scots last week. Wentz scored a team-best 19 points in a loss at Gustavus on 1/29, then poured in 28 points to lead Macalester to a 79-76 win over St. Scholastica on 2/1. Wentz also shot 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from the free-throw line for the week.

Jackson Loge collected 13 rebounds, a pair of steals, and a blocked shot as he led the Cobbers' on a comeback victory over Hamline on 2/1. Loge's defensive presence helped the Cobbers erase a nine-point deficit in the final five minutes of regulation which led to a 69-63 win over the Pipers. His 15 points and 13 rebounds earned Loge his 10th double-double of the year.


MIAC Women's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week
Sophia Jonas
College of Saint Benedict

Sophia Jonas knocked down 11 three-point shots and averaged 17.5 points per game in a pair of victories for the Bennies last week. Jonas scored all 15 of her points from beyond the arc in a 63-52 road win over St. Olaf on 1/29 and followed up by connecting on six threes and two free throws to total 20 points in a 65-60 road victory at Carleton on 2/1. Her six triples in the game tied a career-high and her last conversion gave the Bennies a five-point lead with less than 30 seconds to play.

Emme Golembiewski
St. Catherine University

Emme Golembiewski helped lead the Wildcats to a pair of conference victories last week with a strong performance on the defensive end of the court. Golembiewski blocked a combined nine shots and collected 13 of her 16 boards on defense. She totaled nine rebounds and five blocks in a ten-point win over Concordia on 1/29 before adding another seven rebounds and four blocks in a victory over St. Olaf on 2/1. She also had a steal in each game.


MIAC Men's Hockey Offensive Player of the Week
Nicholas Sewecke
St. Olaf College

Sewickley, Pa.

Nicholas Sewecke helped the Oles sweep Augsburg by recording two goals and one assist, while also winning 75.0 percent (21-of-28) of his faceoffs. On 1/31, Sewecke opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the game and assisted on the game-winning goal with 4:06 remaining in the Oles' 3-2 victory. The next day, Sewecke again gave St. Olaf an early lead just 3:14 into an eventual 4-1 win.

Thomas Lalonde went 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and .939 save percentage in the Oles' weekend sweep of Augsburg. The senior made 19 saves in a 3-2 road win on 1/31 before stopping 27-of-28 shots in a 4-1 home victory on 2/1. Two of the three goals Lalonde conceded on the weekend came on power plays for the Auggies.

Lily Mortenson registered a six-point week in a trio of Gustie wins that included handing No. 1-ranked UW-River Falls its first home loss since 2022 as well as a conference sweep of Bethel. Mortenson remained on the ice for nearly half the game against the Falcons and assisted on a pair of goals, including the 3-2 game-winner. She took 40 faceoffs, put two shots on net, and blocked four UWRF shots. Mortenson went on to add two goals and two assists in the weekend series with the Royals, scoring her team- and MIAC-leading 14th goal of the year in a two-goal game against BU on 1/31. She has at least a point in her last five games, and 13 total in that span.

MIAC Women's Hockey Defensive Player of the Week
Abby Elliott
Gustavus Adolphus College

Abby Elliott scored four goals in three Gustie victories last week while helping to hold opponents to an average of 19.3 shots per game. Elliott now has five goals in her last four games and seven points in her last five after entering her final season without a goal. She added three blocked shots against UWRF.


MIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Jasper Yang opened the 2025 portion of the schedule by going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles for the Knights. Yang rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 2 singles against Morningside on 1/25. The next day, Yang prevailed 6-2, 6-3 atop the singles lineup against Lawrence and added doubles triumphs versus Lawrence and Saint Mary’s. He secured a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles against Central on 2/1, and added another doubles win as well.

MIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Karina Elvestrom
Gustavus Adolphus College

Karina Elvestrom went 1-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles against a pair of Division I opponents in her first weekend of dual matches as a Gustie. Elvestrom won at the No. 1 spot against Northern Iowa in a 4-3 loss and claimed a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over UNI with partner Kaya De Bruijn. Her only losses came to undefeated Creighton (NCAA Division I).
