MIAC announces 2024-25 Men’s Golf awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its award recipients for the 2024-25 men's golf season on Monday.

Bethel senior Will Karkoc was selected as the Men's Golf Player of the Year, while Gustavus first-year Jimmy Abdo was named Rookie of the Year, and Carleton head coach Sloan Wallgren was recognized as Coach of the Year.

Karkoc (Maple Grove, Minn.) was named MIAC Men's Golf Player of the Year after leading all MIAC golfers with a scoring average of 72.8 during the 2024-25 season. Karkoc was a top-five finisher in five of the ten events in which he competed and posted 12 rounds of par or better on the season. He is the second Royal in program history to receive MIAC Player of the Year honors, joining former teammate Conor Schubring, who won the award in 2023 and 2024.

Abdo (Edina, Minn.) was selected MIAC Men's Golf Rookie of the Year after averaging 75.3 shots per round in 2024-25 and finishing off the spring schedule with a pair of top-two results, including a medalist honor at the Gusties' Bobby Krig Invite in April. Abdo is the ninth Gustie in program history to receive Rookie of the Year honors, and the second in the last three seasons.

Wallgren (third season) was celebrated by his peers with MIAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his career after guiding the Knights to the program's first-ever MIAC title in 2024-25. The Knights averaged 298.1 shots per round in 2024-25 and boasted the tournament medalist in three of their eight regular-season multi-team meets.

The MIAC Men's Golf All-Conference team was selected using a combination of MIAC championship results and end-of-season voting. The top 10 finishers (including ties) at the MIAC Championship last fall automatically earned All-MIAC honors, and coaches nominated and voted on five additional players to the All-MIAC squad based on their body of work throughout the season. The conference also recognized honorable mention selections, bestowing the accolade upon any individual who did not place among the top five vote-getters but still received votes from at least three coaches.

Bethel's Will Karkoc became the 19th player in recorded conference history to be named All-MIAC four times, while Gustavus' Chris Gutuza and Teddy Kaste joined Saint John's Andrew Boemer as three-time honorees.
