MIAC Men's Basketball Notebook - January 13, 2026

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - At the midpoint of the 2025-26 men's basketball schedule, Gustavus sits atop the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings with a 5-0 record in league play and an eleven-game win streak in overall games.

NATIONAL NOTABLES
Bethel junior guard Blake Schmitz (Hermantown, Minn. / Hermantown) was selected to D3hoops.com's Team of the Week for his play during Week 7 of the 2025-26 season. Schmitz is the second MIAC men's basketball player to be named to a D3hoops.com Team of the Week this season; Concordia senior forward Jacob Cook (Ashby, Minn. / Ashby) received the honor in Week 1.

Concordia senior forward Jackson Loge (Morris, Minn. / Morris Area) is averaging 12.8 total rebounds per game this season, the second-highest average in NCAA Division III. His 9.08 defensive rebounds per game rank third in D-III, while his 166 total rebounds for the season are the fifth-most in the nation. Loge's 22 rebounds against Oak Hills Christian on 12/19/25 are tied for the fourth-most in any Division III game this season.

Gustavus junior guard Jake Schmitt (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) attempted 17 three-point shots against Transvylania on 12/28/25, tied for the sixth-most in any Division III game this season.

Macalester senior forward Noah Shannon (Northfield, Minn. / New Trier) attempted 21 free throws against Grinnell on 11/15/25, tied for the third-most free-throw attempts in any Division III game this season. His 18 converted free throws in the game are tied for the second-most in any D-III game this season.


AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg first-year guard JJ Semanko (New Hope, Minn. / Hopkins) averaged 21.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game on 61.9 percent shooting (13-of-21) from the field, and 14-of-14 from the free-throw line in a pair of Auggie wins last week. Semanko scored 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, with 13 rebounds and an assist, in the Auggies' 87-55 win over Northwestern on 1/5. He went on to log 13 points with seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 25 minutes of play in Augsburg's 102-70 win over Macalester on 1/10. Semanko has now scored in double figures in 12 of his first 14 collegiate games, with five point-rebound double-doubles.

Bethel junior guard Blake Schmitz (Hermantown, Minn. / Hermantown) went 12-for-15 for 36 points in the Royals' 93-81 victory over Carleton on 1/10. Schmitz was 3-for-5 from long range and 9-for-13 from the charity stripe, and added four assists and five steals in the win. Schmitz also logged a 16-point performance in an 85-83 win over Saint Mary's on 1/7.

Carleton sophomore guard Matt Drake (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville North) averaged 25.0 points per game for the Knights last week. Drake posted a 29-point effort in a 74-73 win over Concordia on 1/7, highlighted by a 6-for-8 showing from three-point range that included the game-winning, go-ahead triple with 2.5 seconds remaining. Drake followed that up with a 21-point showing at Bethel on 1/10. 

Concordia senior forward Jackson Loge (Morris, Minn. / Morris Area) posted double-doubles in two Cobber games last week, averaging 22.0 points and 13.0 rebounds while shooting 57.1 percent (16-for-28) from the field and 80.0 percent (12-for-15) from the free throw line. Loge recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds at Carleton on 1/7 before coming away with 26 points and 16 rebounds in the Cobbers' win at Saint Mary's on 1/10.

Gustavus senior guard Carson Koch (Woodbury, Minn. / East Ridge) led the defensive effort for the Gusties to extend their win streak to 11 games with 15 rebounds and six steals in wins over St. Olaf and Minnesota Morris last week. After collecting seven boards and three steals in a victory over the Oles on 1/7, Koch posted eight rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots against the Cougars, helping Gustavus match the single-game program record for steals with 18 in the win.

Hamline senior guard Brendan Ebel (Farmington, Minn. / Farmington) averaged 21.5 points for the Pipers last week, with 21 points against St. Scholastica on 1/7 and 22 points against Saint John's on 1/10. Ebel shot better than .500 from the paint in both games and finished 18-for-25 from the free throw line. He added 13 boards and five steals on the defensive end of the court.

Macalester senior forward Noah Shannon (Northfield, Minn. / New Trier) posted 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field in a narrow 78-73 loss to UW-Superior on 1/2 before pouring in 30 points while shooting 13-of-18 from the floor to lead the Scots to an 89-77 victory over Saint Mary's on 1/3 for the team's first MIAC win of the season. The latter was Shannon's fourth 30-point performance of the season.

Saint John's sophomore guard Justin Johnson (Prior Lake, Minn. / DeLaSalle) shot 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from the field, including 77.8 percent (7-for-9) from three-point range, and averaged a team-leading 14.5 points in 19.5 minutes off the bench in a 2-0 week for the Johnnies. Johnson went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc in a 76-56 win over Macalester on 1/7 and followed that with a career-high 23 points - on 8-for-9 shooting (5-for-6 from three-point) - in 23 minutes of the Johnnies' 75-73 victory over Hamline on 1/10. Down by two with 4:03 left in the first half, Johnson scored the Johnnies' final 13 points of the half to put SJU ahead for good.

Saint Mary's sophomore forward Jackson Harvey (Winona, Minn. / Winona) scored a career-high 26 points in the Cardinals' loss to Concordia on 1/10. Harvey shot 12-for-19 from the field in the game. He was 5-for-6 from the floor and 1-for-2 from the free-throw line in a loss to Bethel three days earlier. The 6-foot-8 Harvey has shot .500 or better in each of his last seven games.

St. Olaf sophomore forward AJ Uhl (Green Bay, Wis. / Ashwaubenon) shot 62.5 percent (15-for-24) from the field while averaging 16.5 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Oles. Uhl scored a team-high 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including going 3-for-4 from three-point range, against nationally-ranked Gustavus on 1/7 before adding 16 points while going 8-for-14 from the field in a two-point win over St. Scholastica on 1/10.

St. Scholastica junior guard Davion Butler (Phoenix, Ariz. / AZ Compass) led the Saints with 20 points in a 73-71 loss to St. Olaf on 1/10. Butler was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in his fourth 20-point performance of the season.
