MIAC Athletes of the Week - January 19, 2026

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for basketball and hockey on Monday. Student-athletes from Concordia, Gustavus, Saint Mary's, and St. Scholastica claimed the Conference's weekly honors.
 
The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the winter season, team sports (basketball and hockey) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (swimming & diving) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Basketball Offensive Player of the Week
Jake Schmitt

Jake Schmitt averaged 23.0 points per game while going 10-for-18 from three-point range to lead the Gusties to a pair of conference victories and extend the team's win streak to 13 games. Schmitt scored 24 points and recorded four assists in an 82-77 overtime win at Concordia on 1/14 before pouring in 22 points in a 95-62 home win versus Macalester on 1/17. Schmitt shot 8-for-12 from the field and 6-for-8 from long range against the Scots.

Jacob Cook recorded a pair of point-rebound double-doubles in a split week for the Cobbers. Cook totaled 29 points and 21 rebounds against nationally-ranked Gustavus in an overtime loss on 1/14 before narrowly missing a triple-double with 18 points, 13 boards, and eight assists in an 87-73 victory over Augsburg on 1/17. Cook has tallied double-doubles in five of his last six games and eclipsed the 20-point plateau in four of those contests.

Evie Schmitz

Evie Schmitz scored a team-high 20 points to lead the Saints to a 65-63 victory over nationally-ranked Bethel on 1/14. Schmitz knocked down a trio of three-pointers in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead triple with 2:37 remaining. She then iced the game with two free throws in the final 20 seconds. That performance came after recording 22 points in a 62-48 win over Macalester on 1/14. Schmitz has logged five 20-point performances this season and reached double figures in each of her last four contests.
 
MIAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Whitley Ronn

Whitley Ronn came away with a career-high five steals in the Gusties' victory over Macalester on 1/17. Ronn also pulled down three rebounds and blocked a shot in the win. Ronn now has nine steals and three blocks over her last three games.

MIAC Men's Hockey Offensive Player of the Week

Carter Newpower posted the first hat trick of his collegiate career in the Cardinals' 8-1 win over Beloit on 1/16. Newpower netted the Cardinals' go-ahead goal in the first period and proceeded to score in each of the next two frames. Newpower also contributed another goal in a 6-4 loss to UW-River Falls on 1/17. His fourth goal of the weekend came in the third period of the non-conference matchup with the Falcons.
 
MIAC Men's Hockey Defensive Player of the Week

Marko Belak earned the win in-goal as the Gusties topped nationally-ranked UW-Stout, 4-1, on 1/16. Belak held the Blue Devils scoreless for the first 58 minutes of the game, helping Gustavus hand Stout its first home loss of the season.

MIAC Women's Hockey Offensive Player of the Week
Morgan Sauvageau
Concordia College

Morgan Sauvageau contributed five points in the Cobbers' road sweep of St. Scholastica on 1/16-17. Sauvageau had a career-high four assists in the Cobbers' 5-3 win on 1/16, including the setup for the game-winning goal midway through the third period. Her four assists in the game are tied for the most in any NCAA Division III women's hockey contest this season. Sauvageau also started Concordia's streak of four unanswered goals in the third period on 1/17, scoring the game-tying goal at 2:36 of the period.

Magali Fillion recorded 34 saves with one goal allowed in nearly 65 minutes of action against nationally-ranked Gustavus on 1/17. Fillion's lone blemish came 52 seconds into the third period. She went on to hold the Gusties scoreless in overtime and stopped all four shots in the shootout to give SMU an extra point in the conference standings.
