Super Regional berth, OTF qualifiers highlight busy MIAC weekend at nationals

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – NCAA spring championships continue this week for Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) student-athletes, as softball heads to the Super Regional round, and outdoor track & field, women's golf, and the men's and women's tennis individual championships are set to begin.

Softball
Saint Mary's (40-7) battled back from the brink of elimination on Saturday to clinch its second straight trip to the NCAA Softball Super Regionals. The Cardinals had advanced to the winners' bracket with a 5-1 win over UW-Stevens Point on Thursday, but an 8-6 setback against Calvin on Friday left SMU with no margin for error for the remainder of the weekend. Saint Mary's defeated Bethany Lutheran, 9-0, in an elimination game on Friday afternoon before sweeping Calvin, 6-1 and 6-4, in Saturday's regional championship series. Saint Mary's will square off with Simpson (37-6) in a best-of-three Super Regional on May 21-22. The Cardinals and Storm last met in the 2025 NCAA Regionals, where SMU won two of the three matchups with Simpson, including the regional title game. The host for this week's Super Regional is yet to be announced.

The NCAA Tournament nearly saw an All-MIAC Super Regional, as conference champion Saint Benedict (36-11) came up one run short in its regional championship doubleheader with Simpson on Saturday. The Bennies opened the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Central on Thursday before a 12-6 loss to Simpson on Friday forced CSB into must-win contests for the remainder of the double-elimination regional. Saint Benedict rallied with a 4-0 win over Central in an elimination game on Friday afternoon to advance to the regional championship, and handed Simpson a 4-3 defeat on Saturday to force a game two. The Bennies held a 2-1 lead entering the seventh inning before a pair of two-out singles gave the Storm a 3-2 lead. CSB put runners on second and third in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to record the game-tying tally, ending the game on a fielder's choice out at the plate. Pitcher Ellie Peterson, infielder Lauren Freeberg and outfielder Lily Treml were named to the Regional All-Tournament Team, as CSB ended its season with a program record-tying 36 victories.

Women's Golf
MIAC champion Carleton will represent the conference at the 2026 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships as one of 26 automatic qualifiers to the tournament. This will be the sixth time in program history that the Knights will compete as a team at the NCAA Championships. Though Carleton senior Carter Sichol competed at the 2024 and 2025 NCAA Championships as an individual invitee, this will be the first time the full Carleton lineup will compete at nationals since 2023. In addition to the 26 conference champions that received automatic bids to the national championships, eight programs received at-large invitations for a 34-team field. Six individual competitors were also selected from the remaining players who did not qualify with a team, for a total of 176 players.

The championship will begin on Tuesday, May 19, and continue through Friday, May 22, at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, California. The event will consist of both team and individual competition play over 72 holes. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and the top six individuals not on advancing teams. In the team competition, the lowest four scores for each school will count in the day's total score.

A trio of Gusties will represent their program and the MIAC at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Individual Championships later this week. Gustavus teammates Gage Gohl and Dominik Knutson qualified to compete in the Men's Singles Championships, with Gohl and doubles partner Tyler Haddorff earning an invitation to the Doubles Championships. Gohl and Haddorff won the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Doubles Championship together in 2024.

The NCAA individual championships will be May 23-26, at Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and hosted by the University of the South and the City of Chattanooga. The draw for the men's individual championships will be released on May 22.

Baseball
The 2026 baseball season came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday night for MIAC Playoff champion Macalester (30-17), as the Scots fell to defending national champion UW-Whitewater, 9-8, on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Scots had lost the opening contest of the regional to the host Warhawks, 13-4, on Friday before defeating Luther, 14-5, for the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win in the first elimination game on Saturday.

Macalester took a 7-3 lead over UW-Whitewater in the sixth inning of the evening elimination contest, but a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch followed by a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning put the Warhawks back on top. Macalester evened the score at 8-8 with an unearned run on an error in the top of the eighth and got Whitewater down to its final out before the Warhawks were able to power a two-out home run over the left field fence for a walk-off win, ending the Scots' season in the regional semifinals. Macalester set a new program record with 30 victories overall in 2026.

Men's Golf
Bethel and Gustavus were among the 43 teams selected to compete at the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships at Mission Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, last week. The Gusties placed 29th as a team with a 36-hole score of 609, while the Royals finished 32nd with a score of 615.

After 36 holes of competition, the field was cut to only the top 18 teams and the top six individuals not on one of those teams. Bethel first-year and 2025-26 MIAC Rookie of the Year Zeke Roberts was one of those six golfers to make the cut as an individual after finishing the first two rounds of play in a tie for 18th place with an even-par score of 143 (73-70). Roberts finished the tournament with a four-round total of 298 (+11) to place 61st overall.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Golf championship in the first team sudden-death playoff in D-III men's golf national championship history. CMS shot 15-under-par in the final round to finish tied with Illinois Wesleyan at 13-under for the 72-hole tournament. All five players from both teams then returned to the 18th tee for a sudden-death playoff, where CMS collected birdies on a pair of 20-foot putts before sinking a 10-footer for par to secure the national title.
