MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships are set to return to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota this Wednesday for four days of the 2025 conference championships.
The 2025 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships will begin on Wednesday night with a preliminary round of the men's one-meter diving competition at 6:00 p.m. (doors open at 5:00 p.m.), followed by finals of that event, plus the men's and women's 200-yard medley and 800-yard freestyle relays. Finals will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Morning prelim sessions will be held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, all beginning at 10:30 a.m. (doors open at 9:00 a.m.). The evening championship sessions on those days will all begin at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open on Thursday and Friday at 5:00 p.m. Saturday's mile race will begin roughly 45 minutes after the morning session. The fastest mile heat will begin the Saturday evening session. The aquatic center will be cleared following the mile races, and doors for the evening session will open again at 5:00 p.m. A complete championship schedule can be found here.
ADMISSION INFORMATION
All tickets will once again be sold and purchased online via HomeTown Ticketing. There will not be cash sales at the venue; however, spectators can purchase tickets using a mobile device at any time, including while at the venue. "All-session" tickets will grant admission to all seven sessions of the Championships. Adult passes are $73 and student passes are $31. (Note: $3 HomeTown Ticketing fee included; additional convenience and credit card fees will be added during checkout.) Children ages five and under do not require a ticket. Those eligible for student tickets include individuals currently enrolled in college, high school, middle school, and elementary school. Student ID is required where applicable.
Single-session tickets are also available for purchase online only. Single-session adult tickets are $12 each, while student tickets are $6. (Note: additional HomeTown Ticketing convenience and credit card fees will be added during checkout). Children ages five and under do not require a ticket.
As a reminder, glass is strictly prohibited inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Please do not bring any glass water bottles or vases into the venue.
GOING PAPERLESS
Fans will again be able to download heat sheets and other meet information directly from the championship home page to their smart devices or print at home ahead of time. QR codes will be posted at the venue for fans to scan as needed, and links will be updated with the latest information as soon as it is determined after each session.
HANDING OUT THE HARDWARE
A short awards ceremony will follow each event during the four evening sessions. The top three finishers in each event, including relays, will be named to the All-Conference Team, while individual finishers #4-6 and relay finisher #4 will receive honorable mention distinction.
Following the 2025 MIAC Championships, conference head coaches will also select the Men's and Women's Swimmers, Divers, Rookies, and Coaches of the Year. Individual awards will be announced at the meet after the final event is completed on Saturday, February 22.
NATIONAL NOTABLES
Carleton first-year Nina Schwab (Piedmont, Calif.) is nationally ranked in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Schwab ranks ninth in NCAA Division III off the 1-meter board (437.50) and 13th off the 3-meter board (415.60). Both scores were recorded at the Knights' home Cows, Colleges, and Contentment meet on 10/26.
Carleton sophomore Hailey Westrup (Sartell, Minn.) is nationally ranked in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Westrup ranks 22nd in the 1-meter competition (386.10) and 26th in the 3-meter competition (368.60). Both scores were recorded at the Knights' home Cows, Colleges, and Contentment meet on 10/26.
Gustavus' 800 freestyle relay team of first-year Geneva Fackler (Plymouth, Minn. | Wayzata), sophomore Stella Anderson Moye (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. | Simley), first-year Sommer Krause (Farmington, Minn.), and senior Marit Isaacson (St. Paul, Minn. | Central) finished in 7:51.96 at the Roger Ahlman Invitational on 12/6-7/24. The time ranks 49th in NCAA Division III this season.
Gustavus senior Marit Isaacson (St. Paul, Minn. | Central) holds the 14th-fastest NCAA Division III time in the 100 individual medley this season at 59.26. Isaacson achieved the time at the Roger Ahlman Invitational on 12/6-7/24.
Gustavus sophomore Erin Hall (Bloomington, Minn. | Jefferson) scored 329.25 points on the 1-meter board in the Gusties' dual meet with Saint Benedict on 2/1, good for 45th in NCAA Division III this season. Her score of 359.60 ranks 31st in Division III.
Gustavus junior Gabriella Stout (Delano, Minn.) scored 395.55 off the 1-meter board in the Gusties' dual meet with Saint Benedict on 2/1. The score ranks 19th in NCAA Division III this season. Her score of 389.45 off the 3-meter board also ranks 19th in D-III.
Gustavus sophomore Jessica Pagelkopf (Esko, Minn. | Lincoln) scored 324.30 off the 1-meter board in the Gusties' dual meet with Saint Benedict on 2/1. The score ranks 50th in NCAA Division III this season.
Macalester senior Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis. | Memorial) scored 345.75 points off the 3-meter board in the Scots' dual with Grinnell on 1/25, good for the 27th-best six-dive score in Division III this season.
Saint Benedict junior Sabrina Buffetta (Brainerd, Minn.) scored 307.95 points off the 3-meter board in the Bennies' dual meet with Gustavus on 2/1. The score ranks 48th in NCAA Division III this season.
Saint Benedict junior Mikayla Haskamp (Sauk Centre, Minn.) recorded a score of 339.10 off the 1-meter board in the Bennies' dual meet with Gustavus on 2/1. The score ranks 36th in NCAA Division III this season. Her score of 321.00 off the 3-meter board ranks 41st in D-III.
Saint Benedict sophomore Ella Kowalczyk (Minneapolis, Minn. | Southwest) registered a score of 343.05 off the 1-meter board in the Bennies' dual meet with Gustavus on 2/1. The score ranks 38th in NCAA Division III this season. Her score of 379.75 off the 3-meter board ranks 23rd in D-III.
Saint Benedict first-year Emma Netland (Moorhead, Minn.) tallied a score of 314.60 off the 3-meter board in the Bennies' dual meet with Gustavus on 2/1. The score ranks 43rd in NCAA Division III this season.
St. Olaf first-year Emma Haines (Boerne, Texas | Champion) scored 326.15 points off the 1-meter board at the Cows, Colleges, and Contentment meet on 10/26. The score ranks 49th in NCAA Division III this season.
St. Olaf first-year Erica Johnson (Alexandria, Minn.) scored 333.85 points off the 3-meter board at the Cows, Colleges, and Contentment meet on 10/26. The score ranks 35th in NCAA Division III this season.
DEFENDING THE CROWN
Gustavus Adolphus College won the MIAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship for the first time since 2015 last season. The Gusties have eleven MIAC women’s swimming & diving titles overall, second only to St. Olaf’s 15.
Seven competitors are previous MIAC individual champions heading into the 2024 Championships.
Gustavus senior Marit Isaacson (St. Paul, Minn. | Central) won the 100-yard backstroke competition at the 2022 MIAC Championships.
Macalester junior Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) is the two-time defending MIAC champion in the 200-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle. She also added a MIAC crown in the 500 free in 2024.
Macalester junior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif. | Tamalpais) left the 2024 MIAC Championships with individual titles in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes.
Macalester senior Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn. | Bethlehem Academy) won the 100-yard backstroke at the 2023 MIAC Championships.
St. Catherine junior Ella Hochstetler (Coralville, Iowa | West) took home top honors in the 100 and 200 backstrokes at the 2024 MIAC Championships.
St. Catherine senior Emma Svendsen (Mead, Colo.) is the two-time defending MIAC champion in the 100- and 200-yard butterflies. She also won the 200 IM in 2024.
St. Olaf junior Paige Steenblock (Northfield, Minn.) is the reigning MIAC champion in the 400 individual medley.
AROUND THE MIAC
Carleton first-year Nina Schwab (Piedmont, Calif.) broke two program and two Thorpe Pool records as she swept the diving competitions in the Knights' dual with St. Olaf on 2/1. On the 1-meter board, Schwab tallied a six-dive score of 291.25, bettering the program and pool records she had set seven days earlier. When the action moved to the higher height, she totaled 329.25 points, surpassing the previous six-dive program and pool record of 317.10 that had stood since 2002.
Concordia sophomore Callie Metsala (Princeton, Minn.) swam a 2:38.31 in the 200-yard breaststroke at the Cobbers' dual meet with Division II Mary on 1/25. It was her first time swimming the event this season, and her time was six seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Metsala also finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.67.
Gustavus first-year Geneva Fackler led the Gusties at the University of Minnesota’s First Chance Meet on 2/7-8, posting three of the top Division III times at the meet. Fackler helped the 400 medley relay take first with a time of 4:05.61 and added a 1:56.93 in the 200 freestyle and an 18:16.05 in the 1650 of the same stroke. She also had the second-fastest D-III time (5:19.06) in the 500 freestyle.
Hamline senior Sila Yurttas (Shoreview, Minn. | Mounds View) claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.69), 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.84), and 100-yard butterfly (1:04.24) titles at the Piper Red Invite on 2/1. She also swam the third leg of the Pipers' 200 freestyle relay team that placed second in 1:49.12.
Macalester junior Izzy Uhlhorn-Thornton (Mill Valley, Calif. | Tamalpais) was the top Division III finisher in two of her three individual events at the University of Minnesota's First Chance Meet on 2/7-8. Uhlhorn-Thornton swam the 100-breaststroke in 1:06.95, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:26.82, and the 400-yard individual medley in 4:47.29. Both of her breaststroke times rank second in the MIAC this season, with her 200 time being good for a third-place finish overall at the meet.
Saint Benedict junior Megan Bartels (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) captured a pair of breaststroke titles in the Bennies' dual with Gustavus on 2/1. Bartels won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.40 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.26. She was also part of the second-place 200-medley relay that clocked in at 1:52.79.
St. Catherine junior Ella Hochstetler (Coralville, Iowa | West) won the 50 free (25.28) and 200 back (2:12.09) in a dual meet with Division II Concordia-St. Paul on 1/25. Hochstetler also placed second in the 200 free (2:04.17) and helped the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.39).
St. Olaf first-year Olivia Small (Wauwatosa, Wis. | East) broke a pair of Thorpe Pool records in the Oles' dual at Carleton on 2/1. Small led off the Oles' 400-yard medley relay that broke the pool record in 4:02.40 with a split of 58.64 in the 100-yard backstroke. Small's 100-back time represented a new pool record as well. Small also won the 50-yard backstroke (27.51) and 200-yard backstroke (2:11.26) while placing third in the 50-yard butterfly (27.85).
