MIAC Athletes of the Week - September 27, 2022

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for cross country and golf on Tuesday. Student-athletes from Carleton, Saint Benedict, Saint John's, and St. Scholastica claimed the Conference's weekly honors for September 20-26, 2022.

The MIAC Athlete of the Week awards are nominated by the Conference's sports information directors and selected by MIAC staff. Throughout the fall season, team sports (football, soccer and volleyball) Athletes of the Week will be recognized on Monday afternoons, with individual sports (cross country and golf) announced on Tuesday afternoons. The winners of the latest Athlete of the Week awards are listed below, along with details on their outstanding performances.

MIAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

St. Paul, Minn. | Highland Park

Calvin Boone crossed the finish line in 26:00.6 at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational last Friday. He finished 18th overall among the 400 runners in the field. Boone's time was fourth-fastest among NCAA Division III competitors and 0.3 off his previous top time at the meet.

MIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week
Fiona Smith
College of Saint Benedict

Fiona Smith was the top NCAA Division III finisher at the Roy Griak Invitational last Friday in a field that included 386 NCAA Division II, Division III, and NAIA competitors. Smith finished second overall in the race with a time of 21:18.6. Her time was first among Division III runners, 13 seconds out of first place, more than 30 seconds faster than the third place finisher, and 1:47 faster than the next closest D-III finisher.


MIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week
Sam Berger

Sam Berger won his first collegiate tournament with a three-day total of 214 (-2) to help the Johnnies win the three-day Twin Cities Classic by 40 shots over the weekend. Berger was even-par on the 12 par-3 holes and 6-under on the 12 par-5 holes in the tournament. Berger shot minus-4 on his final nine holes with four birdies and five pars to record 71 (-1) on Monday at Edina Country Club and posted a career-low 68 (-4) on Sunday at the Links at Northfork in Ramsey.

Carter Sichol won the St. Kate's Invitational over the weekend with a 1-over-par score of 145 (74-71). Sichol was tied for third at plus-2 after an up-and-down first round that included a pair of triple bogeys but also featured four birdies and an eagle. She fired a 1-under par 71 in round two to earn the top spot on the leaderboard. After a bogey on the first hole of the round, she notched birdies on No. 5 and No. 11 and parred the remaining 15 holes for a two-shot margin of victory.
