MIAC announces 2022-23 Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its annual Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards on Thursday. 
 
The top three finishers in each event at the 2023 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships received All-Conference honors, while individual finishers 4-6 and the fourth-place relay team earned honorable mention distinction. The conference also announced its individual award recipients for Men's and Women's Swimmers, Divers, Rookies, and Head Coaches of the Year.
  
St. Catherine senior Jordyn Wentzel (Corcoran, Minn. | Delano) was named the Women's Swimmer of the Year for an unprecedented fourth time in her career. Only five women in recorded MIAC history have won the award more than once and only Wentzel has taken home top honors more than twice. Wentzel scored 60 points for the MIAC-champion Wildcats at the 2023 conference championship meet, placing first in three individual events and two relays, in addition to taking second in two other relays. She won the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.44 ST22), 200 Breaststroke (2:12.94 ST22), and 500 Freestyle (4:55.48 ST22), and was part of the first-place 400 Medley Relay (3:48.12 ST22) and 800 Freestyle Relay (7:30.81 ST22). Wentzel also swam on second-place relay teams in the 200 Medley Relay (1:44.65 B) and 400 Freestyle Relay (3:29.45 B).
 
Gustavus senior Erik Small (Hudson, Wis.) was selected by MIAC head coaches as the Men’s Swimmer of the Year. Small placed first in all five of his events – 200 IM (1:51.39), 400 IM (4:00.27 B), 200 Butterfly (1:52.75), and the 200 (1:21.57 B) and 400 (3:00.89 B) Freestyle Relays. Small is now the eighth Gustie since 2002 to be named MIAC Swimmer of the Year.
 
St. Olaf junior Izzy Treanor (Minneapolis, Minn. | Wayzata) earned Women’s Diver of the Year honors after totaling the best combined score off both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the conference championships. Treanor won both competitions, scoring 425.65 off the 1-meter board and 438.45 off the 3-meter. Treanor is the fourth different Ole to be named MIAC Women’s Diver of the Year since 2002 and the first to earn the honor since 2018.
 
Saint John's sophomore Eli Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn. | Sauk Rapids-Rice) earned his second straight Men’s Diver of the Year honor after securing the top combined score off both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the MIAC Championships. Grabinski won the 3-meter competition with 476.10 points and placed second in the 1-meter competition with 465.50 points. He is the third SJU diver to receive the conference award and the fourth diver in recorded MIAC history to win back-to-back Men's Diver of the Year honors.
 
Macalester first-year swimmer Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) was selected as the inaugural recipient of the MIAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Year after leading all first-year athletes with 57 points at the 2023 MIAC Championships. Schmit won both the 200 Freestyle (1:53.59) and 1650 Freestyle (17:15.83 B) races and placed second in the 500 Freestyle (5:01.60). She also earned an additional All-MIAC honor as part of the Scots’ third-place 800 Freestyle Relay team (7:47.11) and received honorable mention distinction as part of the fourth-place 400 Freestyle Relay squad (3:35.32).
 
Carleton first-year Aiden Guan (Beijing, China | Beijing Academy) and Saint John’s first-year Carsten Reuter (St. Cloud, Minn. | Tech) were named Co-Rookies of the Year for Men’s Swimming & Diving. Guan earned All-Conference honors as the runner-up in the 200 Butterfly (1:54.04) and as a member of the Knights’ second-place 200 Freestyle Relay (1:25.07) and 400 Medley Relay (3:27.32), and third-place 200 Medley Relay (1:33.74) squads. He also received honorable mention distinction in the 100 Butterfly (50.58). Reuter earned a trio of All-Conference honors as the third-place swimmer in the 100 Freestyle (46.00) and as part of the Johnnies’ runner-up 200 Freestyle Relay (1:22.31) and 400 Freestyle Relay (3:04.53) teams. He was also honorable mention in the 50 Freestyle (21.12) and 100 Butterfly (51.22).
 
Macalester head coach Kyllian Griffin was named Women’s Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year for the first time in his career after guiding the Scots to a third-place team finish at the 2023 MIAC Championships. Griffin’s women’s team broke 12 program records, won three individual titles, and posted nine All-MIAC performances at the conference championship meet. He is the second Macalester coach since 2002 to be selected Women’s Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year, joining four-time recipient Bob Pearson (2002-04, 2006).
 
On the men's side, Jon Carlson was recognized by his peers for the sixth time - and fourth in a row - with Coach of the Year honors. Carlson's team once again ran away with the men's title in 2022, claiming victory by 274 points. The Gustie men won 11 individual events and all five relay races, locking down 40 All-Conference honors in the process.
