MIAC announces 2023-24 Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced its annual Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards on Wednesday.
 
The top three finishers in each event at the 2024 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships received All-Conference honors, while individual finishers 4-6 and the fourth-place relay team earned honorable mention distinction. The conference also announced its individual award recipients for Men's and Women's Swimmers, Divers, Rookies, and Head Coaches of the Year.

Macalester sophomore Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) and St. Catherine junior Emma Svendsen (Mead, Colo.) shared Women's Swimmer of the Year honors as the top individual scorers at the meet. 

Schmit claimed MIAC championships in the 200 free (1:53.67), 500 free (5:03.55), and 1650 free (17:31.39). She also helped the Scots to title in the 800 freestyle relay (7:44.13) as well as a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.99). Schmit is the second Scot to be named MIAC Women's Swimmer of the Year, joining 2006 recipient Heather Lendway.

Svendsen won individual MIAC titles in the 100 fly (56.56), 200 fly (2:08.14), and 200 IM (2:07.80). She also helped the Wildcats to a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:52.89) and second-place results in the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.83) and 800 freestyle relay (7:45.61). Svendsen joins former teammate and current SCU assistant coach Jordyn Wentzel as Wildcats to earn MIAC Women's Swimmer of the Year honors. Wentzel won the award four times from 2019-23.

Gustavus seniors Peyton Richardson (Crystal Lake, Ill. | Prairie Ridge) and Matt Strom (Rochester, Minn. | Century) were named Co-Swimmers of the Year on the men's side after tying for the most points in the men's individual events. Richardson won the 100 fly (48.78), 200 fly (1:51.49), and 200 IM (1:50.35), while Strom touched the wall first in the 500 free (4:30.58), 100 back (49.63), and 200 back (1:47.52). Both also swam on the Gusties' victorious 200 medley relay (1:30.24), 400 freestyle relay (3:04.05), and 800 freestyle relay teams (6:45.08). In addition, Richardson swam on the first-place 400 medley relay team (3:23.52) and Strom swam on the champion 200 freestyle relay squad (1:23.28). 

The MIAC has had Co-Swimmers of the Year in men's swimming & diving three times in recorded conference history with all occurring in the last five championships; however, this is the first time that two teammates have shared the award. The honor is the first for Richardson and the second for Strom, who also received the award in 2022. This is the fifth straight year that a Gustie has won the award.
 
St. Olaf senior Izzy Treanor (Minneapolis, Minn. | Wayzata) earned Women's Diver of the Year honors for a second consecutive season after totaling the best combined score off of both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the conference championships. Treanor won both competitions once again, scoring 429.05 off the 1-meter board and 440.35 off the 3-meter. Treanor is the fourth competitor to repeat as MIAC Women's Diver of the Year in recorded conference history, and the first to do so since St. Catherine's Jenna Nagy in 2014-15.
 
Saint John's junior Eli Grabinski (Sauk Rapids, Minn. | Sauk Rapids-Rice) and St. Olaf senior Oscar Hanifl (Northfield, Minn.) shared Men's Diver of the Year distinction. Hanifl won the 1-meter competition (470.05) and placed second off the 3-meter board (426.65), while Grabinski took home the conference title in the 3-meter (485.55) and was the runner-up off the 1-meter board (457.25). The award is the third in a row for Grabinski who is the third men's diver since 2002 to receive the award in three straight seasons. Hanifl is the sixth Ole to win the award and the first since 2019.

Gustavus first-year Stella Anderson Moye (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. | Simley) was named Women's Rookie of the Year after helping the Gusties to titles in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.18) and 400 freestyle relay (3:32.69). Anderson Moye also swam on the third-place 800 freestyle relay team (7:46.65) and picked up honorable mention All-Conference distinction in the 100 free (53.72) and 500 free (5:14.38). She is the first Gustie swimmer to receive Women's Rookie of the Year honors.

Gustavus first-year Logan Cyr (Maple Grove, Minn.) received Men's Rookie of the Year honors. Cyr swam on a trio of championship relays including the 400 medley (3:23.52), 400 freestyle (3:04.05), and 800 freestyle (6:45.08). He also placed second individually in the 400 IM (4:09.02) and third in the 500 free (4:41.04) and 200 back (1:55.47). He is the first Gustavus swimmer to receive Men's Rookie of the Year honors.
 
Macalester head coach Kyllian Griffin (6th season) was named Women's Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year for the second straight season after guiding the Scots to a third-place team finish at the 2024 MIAC Championships. Griffin's women's team broke eight program records, won five individual titles, one relay championship and posted 17 total All-MIAC performances at the conference championship meet. He is the second Macalester coach since 2002 to be selected Women's Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year, joining four-time recipient Bob Pearson (2002-04, 2006).
 
On the men's side, Carleton's Andy Clark (31st season) and Gustavus' Jon Carlson (34th season) were selected by their peers as Co-Coaches of the Year for MIAC Men's Swimming & Diving. The award is Carlson's seventh and fifth in a row. Gustavus won the men's team title in 2024, claiming victory by 237 points. The Gustie men won eight individual events and all five relay races, locking down 36 All-Conference honors in the process. Clark's Knights placed second as a team for the program's best finish at the MIAC Championships since rejoining the conference in 1983. Carleton moved up from third to second on the final day of the meet, earning seven individual All-Conference honors, three All-Conference relays, and one new program record in the process. Clark was previously awarded MIAC Women's Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and 2017.
