2025 MIAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship Preview

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The 2025 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set to get underway on Friday, as eleven men's teams from around the league will compete in the two-day meet held at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships officially kicked off last week with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon competitions held at Carleton College. This weekend's action will begin on Friday afternoon with field events starting at 2:00 p.m. and track events beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday's events are scheduled for a noon start with the final set of events - the women's and men's 4x400 relay - running at 5:10 p.m.


FOLLOW THE ACTION
The MIAC has a homepage dedicated to the 2025 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, complete with the event schedule, entries, heat sheets, and links to follow the action. Championship events will be streamed live on the MIAC Sports NetworkResults and recaps of the Championships will be made available throughout the event.

Daily tickets are required to attend the MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. All tickets will be sold and purchased online via HomeTown Ticketing. There will not be cash sales at the venue; however, spectators can purchase tickets using a mobile device at any time, including while at the venue. Tickets are available for purchase on the MIAC's HomeTown Ticketing site.
 
Single-day adult tickets will be $12, and student tickets are $3. (Note: additional HomeTown Ticketing convenience and credit card fees will be added during checkout, with estimated totals being $13.70 for adult / $4.43 for student per single-day ticket.) Children ages five and under do not require a ticket. Those eligible for student tickets include individuals currently enrolled in college, high school, middle school, and elementary school. Student ID is required where applicable.

HANDING OUT THE HARDWARE
MIAC championship plaques will be presented to the first-place women's and men's teams at the conclusion of the meet on Saturday afternoon. Bethel swept both the men's and women's championships in 2024.

In addition to team awards, the top three finishers in each event will automatically earn All-Conference honors, while the fourth-through-sixth place finishers will be named Honorable Mention.

Individual awards will be voted on by coaches following the meet and will be announced, along with the complete list of All-Conference and honorable mention recipients, next week.

IN THE POLLS
Three MIAC teams earned spots in the latest United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday, May 6. Bethel is No. 11, Saint John's is No. 14, and Concordia is No. 20.

The Royals and Johnnies rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in the latest USTFCCCA's regional rankings, released on Tuesday, May 6, while St. Olaf is No. 10. All eleven MIAC squads rank among the region's top 33.

NATIONAL NOTABLES
Bethel senior Jayson Ekiyor (Dayton, Minn. | Providence Academy) ran the third-fastest 110-hurdle time in NCAA Division III this season at 13.83 (4/23).

Bethel junior Grant Nelson (Minneapolis, Minn. | Providence Academy) ranks fourth in NCAA Division III for the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.70 (4/12).

Bethel senior Jacob Parent (New Richmond, Wis.) has the sixth-fastest 200-meter time in NCAA Division III this season at 20.99 (4/23). Parent also ranks eighth in the 400 meters at 47.16 (4/12).


The Bethel 4x400 relay team of senior Jacob Parent (New Richmond, Wis.), senior Josh Thomsen (North Oaks, Minn. | Mounds View), sophomore Victor Lelinga (New Brighton, Minn. | Mounds View), and junior Grant Nelson (Minneapolis, Minn. | Providence Academy) ran the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season at 3:07.52 (4/23).

Concordia senior Cooper Folkestad (Wadena, Minn. | Wadena-Deer Park) leads NCAA Division III in the shot put with a mark of 18.62 meters (61' 1.25") this season. His discus throw of 52.56 meters (172' 5") ranks seventh in the nation.

Concordia sophomore Brady Goss (Devils Lake, N.D.) ranks fifth in D-III with a 3,000-meter steeplechase time of 8:51.30 (4/23) this season.

Saint John's senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn. | Champlin Park) has the fourth-fastest 100-meter time in Division III this season at 10.32 (4/12), while his 200-meter time of 21.04 (4/23) ranks seventh in the nation.

Saint John's senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) has the fourth-best decathlon score in D-III this year at 6,905 (5/1-2).

Saint John's senior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo. | Arapahoe) is eighth in Division III with a high jump clearance of 2.06 meters (6' 9") this season (4/11).

Saint John's 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore Matt Hansen (Longmont, Colo. | Niwot), senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn. | Champlin Park), sophomore Kieran Murnan (Lakeville, Minn. | Holy Angels), and first-year Max Reis (West Fargo, N.D. | Spectrum) ran the sixth-fastest time in D-III this spring at 40.28 (4/23).


DEFENDING THE CROWN
Bethel senior Jayson Ekiyor (Dayton, Minn. | Providence Academy) is the defending MIAC champ in the 110-meter hurdles. He crossed the finish line in 14.12 last spring.

Bethel senior Jacob Parent (New Richmond, Wis.) won the 400-meter dash in 46.76 two years ago and repeated with a time of 46.66 last spring.

Carleton junior Indy Lyness (Silver Spring, Md. | Montgomery Blair) is the reigning 800-meter run champion in the MIAC after winning in 1:53.56 last spring.

Concordia senior Cooper Folkestad (Wadena, Minn. | Wadena-Deer Park) is the defending MIAC champion in the shot put. His throw of 17.07 meters won the event in 2024.

Concordia sophomore Eli Hayes (Fargo, N.D. | Davies) is the reigning conference champ in the javelin throw, having won in 2024 with a distance of 56.73 meters.

Saint John's senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn. | Champlin Park) is a two-time MIAC champion in both the 100 and 200. Arthur won the 2023 100-meter title in 10.46 and repeated in 2024 with a time of 10.32. He won the 200-meter dash in 2022 with a time of 21.20 and crossed the finish line in 20.68 last year.

Saint John's senior Jackson McDowell (Centennial, Colo. | Arapahoe) won the high jump at the 2024 MIAC Outdoor Championships with a clearance of 2.10 meters.

Saint John's senior Zach Schaffer (Chaska, Minn.) is the reigning MIAC long jump champion with a leap of 7.23 meters in 2024.


AROUND THE MIAC
Augsburg first-year Brandon Travis (Baton Rouge, La. | Juan Seguin HS) recorded a season-best effort in the men's triple jump at the Gary Wilson Invitational on 4/23, finishing third with a 13.78-meter (45' 2.5") leap. It is the third-best distance in the MIAC this season.

Bethel senior Jayson Ekiyor (Dayton, Minn. | Providence Academy) ran the eighth-fastest 110-meter hurdle time in NCAA Division III history at the Gary Wilson Invitational on 4/23. Ekiyor's time of 13.83 set the Royals' program record and ranks third on the D-III performance list this season. Ekiyor also ran the 400-meter hurdles in 53.26 - good for the top time in the MIAC and the 12th-fastest time in the nation.

Carleton junior Gabe Nichols (Grove City, Penn.) posted a personal-best time of 14:34.50 in the 5K at the UW-Platteville Invitational on 4/11. His time ranks third in the MIAC this season.

Concordia senior Cooper Folkestad (Wadena, Minn. | Wadena-Deer Park) broke his own program record in the shot put at the Cobber Open on 5/3, posting a distance of 18.62 meters (61' 1.25"). The throw leads all of NCAA Division III this season. Folkestad is the first MIAC athlete in at least three decades to record a shot put distance greater than 61 feet.

Gustavus first-year Liam Frommelt (Woodbury, Minn.) won both the long jump and the triple jump at the Drake Alternative on 4/26. Frommelt's personal-best mark of 14.21 meters (46' 7.5") in the triple jump set the meet record and ranks third in program history. Frommelt also won the long jump with a mark of 6.64 meters (21' 9.5").

Hamline sophomore Austin Schloeder (Buffalo, Minn. | Rockford) won the pole vault at the Bethel Invitational on 4/12 with a personal-record clearance of 4.93 (16' 2"). The vault leads the MIAC, ranks 16th in NCAA Division III, and is the second-best in program history.

Macalester senior Arlo Heitler (Hastings, N.Y.) ranks among the top 50 in the nation in three events this spring. His 100-meter time of 10.58 (4/24) is 49th in D-III, as is his 200-meter time of 21.42 (5/3), while his 400-meter time of 47.63 (4/12) ranks 28th in the country.

Saint John's senior Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) won the MIAC decathlon on 5/1-2 with 6,905 points, the second-highest total in program history. Lelwica won six of the ten events, including three of the final five. He recorded four personal bests and is now a five-time All-MIAC honoree in the multi-events.

Saint Mary's first-year Ryan Cramer (Elk River, Minn.) ran the 100 meters in 10.86 at the Phil Esten Challenge on 4/17. The time ranks seventh-fastest in the MIAC this season.

St. Olaf junior Kevin Turlington (Rochester, Minn. | Lourdes) won the 5,000-meter run with a meet-record time of 14:11.84 at the Meet of the UnSaintly on 4/30. Turlington pulled away from the field for a near 12-second win with a time that is the fastest in the conference by nearly 14 seconds, while ranking 17th nationally, and second on St. Olaf's all-time list.

St. Scholastica graduate student Calvin Boone (St. Paul, Minn. | Highland Park) ran the top 1,500-meter time in the MIAC this season, clocking in at 3:49.84 at the Meet of the UnSaintly on 4/30. Boone's time ranks 15th in NCAA Division III this season.
